ASTTU Welcomes New Partner: Ironworkers Local 623

We’re proud to stand with Ironworkers Local 623 in a shared commitment to protecting Members, strengthening union labor, and building a stronger future for ironworkers across Louisiana.

ST. LOUIS and BATON ROUGE, LA, March 6, 2026 / — Ironworkers Local 623 has been representing skilled ironworkers in the Baton Rouge region since 1940, when the Local received its charter from the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Ironworkers. Today, Local 623 continues to uphold the proud traditions of the ironworking trade while supporting workers and contractors throughout the region.

The roots of Local 623 are closely tied to Baton Rouge’s industrial growth. With the expansion of the Standard Oil refinery and the construction of the Huey P. Long Bridge across the Mississippi River, the need for highly skilled ironworkers grew rapidly. Local 623 was formed to meet that demand, providing trained craftsmen whose work helped build the infrastructure that powered the region’s economy.

Today, Local 623 remains focused on strengthening the future of the trade through organizing and apprenticeship training. By educating workers about the advantages of union membership—including strong wages, comprehensive benefits, training opportunities, and a nationwide network of brotherhood and solidarity—the Local continues to grow its ranks and ensure that ironworkers have safe jobs, fair treatment, and long-term career opportunities.

The Association of Skilled Trade and Transportation Unions (ASTTU) is honored to welcome Ironworkers Local 623 as a new partner. Together, we will work to protect their Members, support union labor, and continue building a stronger future for workers across Louisiana and beyond.
